    Campus Innovations?

    Dear Colleagues,

As good craftsmanship depends on the use of the right tools, we always adopt the right academic innovations which include campus innovations in order to achieve our mission of nurturing and developing talents and creating applicable knowledge.

We are highly aware of our physical constraints such as scattered office locations, insufficient communal meeting and activity rooms, and not enough space for research and learning! To produce a more functional and sustainable campus, the university has started our strategic space planning and consolidating office locations to communicate a stronger sense of identity, scheduled for completion by 2023:

    • Yeung Kin Man Academic Building (YEUNG): College of Engineering, College of Science, School of Energy and Environment
    • Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building (LI): School of Law, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, School of Continuing and Professional Education (Head Office)
    • Lau Ming Wai Academic Building (LAU): College of Business, School of Data Science
    • Jockey Club One Health Tower (JCT): Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, 1,600-seater auditorium, the rebuilt Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre with an indoor running track linked to an outdoor track
    • Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC): School of Creative Media, Department of Media and Communication, Department of English
    • Academic Exchange Building (Alice Cheng Hall and Jockey Club Hall): Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), CityU Lodge (with 80-room capacity)

These projects and the planned International Centre building have been ongoing. Also proposed is the renovation and modernisation of the Young Chung Yee Health Centre. When completed, our campus will provide a better environment for world-class learning, teaching and research. Despite the coronavirus outbreak and other unprecedented challenges, CityU continued to run classes through interactive online teaching to Hong Kong and non-local students, thanks to the prompt and concerted effort of multiple units.

    • Technology: We customised and integrated various tools to create a robust online learning environment within a few days. The delivery infrastructure was also strengthened to ensure smooth delivery of the online classes.
    • Pedagogy: We enabled more than 1,000 academic staff to effectively operate in the new environment through prompt training and support for the new learning model. I myself also attended the training session.

At 9am on 7 February 2020, CityU-Learning went online!?For the first time, interactive online teaching has been implemented at university-scale in Hong Kong! Feedback from teachers and students has been positive. The technology worked, the classes were interactive, and students appreciated the opportunity to continue their studies at this difficult time. Teachers are quickly expanding their online pedagogy to enrich the learning experience.

Such academic innovations underscore our boldness in tackling problems under pressure. In the words of Johann von Goethe:

Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!

    Proud of you all!

    Way Kuo
    President and University Distinguished Professor
